I am a fully qualified dyslexia teacher and assessor, with over 25 years of experience as a teacher including working at The Unicorn School (a specialist school for learners with dyslexia and co-occurring conditions). I have a Level 5 and a Level 7 diploma, and an APC (Assessment Practising Certificate). I am a full member of the Professional Association of Teachers of students with Specific Learning Difficulties (Patoss).
What is Dyslexia? See this definition
I offer the following two services:
I offer Full Diagnostic Assessments for learners aged 8–16, providing a clear and detailed picture of their strengths and areas of need, together with practical recommendations for school, private tuition and home. I also include guidance regarding examination access arrangements and, where appropriate, confirmation of eligibility for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) should dyslexia be diagnosed.
Before the assessment, I ask parents and teachers to complete questionnaires and ensure the child has had an eye test within the last two years. The questionnaires provide valuable background information and form an important part of the evidence when reaching a conclusion.
The assessment explores three key areas:
Language and Reasoning
Cognitive Presentation
Attainment
Difficulties in cognitive presentation, how a child processes information, can help explain why reading and spelling may be harder than expected, even when they show strengths in other areas such as langage and reasoning. However, every person is unique but processing differences are expected in a profile of dyslexia.
Other conditions can also occur with dyslexia and I include onward referrals within my report, if appropriate. The assessment usually takes approximately 3 to 3 ½ hours to complete.
I aim to complete the report within three weeks and am happy to arrange meetings to answer any questions beforehand and to discuss the findings afterwards.
I offer specialist tutoring to suit the learner’s needs, including support with reading, spelling, extended writing, answering comprehension questions and basic maths skills. I hope to equip the learner with useful strategies and skills to develop their confidence so that they can move forwards.
I can travel locally to teach on a 1:1 or I can teach in my home. You are welcome to stay in our living room during the teaching session. I am DBS checked.
